And what an image it is! But nothing could be more suitable to sum up Roger Vadim‘s directoral debut Et Dieu… créa la femme (…And God Created Woman) This was also the debut of blonde, breton-bearing, bombshell Brigitte Bardot. I think her performance in this film just goes to show that she always had that “it” factor and that “va-va-voom” factor.
The film, like many of its time, is not particularly showy. The story is simple. In the paradisal backdrop of St. Tropez, the sexpot, Juliette (Bardot), loves one brother but chooses to marry his brother. Juliette passes much of her days moping in bed, being drooled over men, bicycling about in pencil skirts, or lounging outside naked.

Bardot looks ravishing throughout the film. Her outfits are ridiculously simple. She doesn’t bother with shoes let alone accessories.

Juliette’s outfits are complete classics, if somewhat specific to their scenery. Don’t you love those button down slips that can be pulled open on the beach? Or half and half? Her ruffled up do’s make me long for longer locks. *sigh* A perfect mix of elegance and casual cool.
Despite Bardot‘s lack of embellishment in costume, there is no denying how much sexuality she oozes on screen. This all explodes in the final (and my favourite!) scene with Bardot‘s infamous mambo performance.

Les Parapluies de Cherbourg / The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

France, 1964 Directed: Jacques Demy. Starring: Catherine Deneuve, Nino Castelnuovo and Anne Vernon.

It’s been raining outside…(it’s SUMMER here). To console myself I thought it would be a good idea to watch The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. A trendy, gorgeous, French Nouvelle Vague period film where the characters endure the rain with the power of SONG + DANCE. Great idea!

Oh yeah…that’s right…The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is not so much a cheesy musical as much as a tragic operetta where the characters sing their lines simply because that’s how they roll. This is no dancing matter. Nevertheless, it’s beautiful and if you like melodrama (ooo yes I DO) you’ll love it.

In brief: Geneviève (Deneuve) lives with her widowed mother and is in love with Guy (Castelnuovo). Her mother won’t let them marry and they are drawn apart by Guy’s military duties. Geneviève falls pregnant and marries a rich bachelor to support herself. Guy returns and is devastated but moves onto a new femme. Wait for the final scene, so heartbreaking!

One of the most striking elements of this film is the lovely pastel colour scheme. Bernard Evein, the Production Designer, did a beautiful job of tying the scenery to the costumery. How could you not want to match your jacket to your wallpaper? Enjoy!

Breathless à la Vogue

US Vogue, Oct 1990. Photographed: Ellen Von Unwerth. Starring: Christy Turlington

I love catching fashion editorials that take from the movies. It’s always fun to see how someone reinvents and interprets the stylistic traits of a character. It’s also a good excuse to dig around and pull out editorials from days gone by (and which one’s are still vivid in our memories!).

I couldn’t help use yesterday’s post as an excuse to look again at one of my most darling films, Breathless, reinterprets here for US Vogue, October 1990 by Ellen Von Unwerth. Enjoy!!
