Sexy vs. Safe
26 Apr 2011
There is a high likelihood that if you are reading this, that you frequent numerous other fashion blogs on a daily basis. I do so also. It is a fantastic phenomenon to be able to ramble through the closets and lives of people from all walks of life, experiences, identities, cultures and attitudes. Despite the vast array of variants, at times there are such striking similarities in the results. It is both fascinating and exciting to observe.
Drawing on this, I was thrilled to turn upon the work of Sarah Hughes in Safe & Sexy, a photographer who traverses the globe snapping men + women in self styled outfits that make them feel safest vs. sexiest. I love that in her project she gets to interview the participants and ask them about what they were thinking when considering their outfits. Different countries emanate different perceptions, needs and considerations when constructing the two vibes. It’s been making my daily essential image perusings from a new angle. Check out a couple and the clip below:

This is such a great idea for a photography project! For me safe is jeans and a huuuuuuge jumper, and some ballerinas. Sexy is a pretty dress, some fabulous high heels and some eyeliner

Isn’t it just? I hope you venture over to the site and look through the mass array of results.

this is awesome!!jeans+t-shirt+cardigan is my safe choice
a mini dress on the other hand (but with no revealling cleavage) is a sexy choice!

Hi Anna, Yeah it’s so fascinating. And a great angle to think about emotive responses in regards to dressing. This could surely be explored more in the blogging area. It’s funny how uniform the responses seem to be, although every one unique in it’s own right. Be sure to check out the project!

This is such an amazing idea! I wish I came up with it myself..

I think my safe outfit is jeans (it’s funny how many people would pick jeans), wedges and v-neck and my sexy is shift or full skirt dress, heels and a small bag or clutch.

I’m sure lots of people would pick jeans, as well as uniforms. I like the sound of your sexy though! It’s most interesting to see the variations and similarities from place to place.

[...] Photographer Sarah Hughes has been traveling the world taking portraits of men and women in self-styled outfits that make them feel their safest and, in contrast, their sexiest. Not a dichotomy that I would’ve made instinctively, but a truly fascinating one. Also a fabulous array of ages, body types, ethnicities, and styles are represented. (Via Fashion in Films.) [...]

funny that most people say jeans. i don’t feel safe in jeans at all! i would say a baggy dress with tights is my safe, then take away the tights, add some heels and statement jewellery and that’s sexy
May 05, 2011 @ 06:57:11
Hi Sarah, That’s really interesting. What makes you say you don’t feel safe in jeans?
Apr 30, 2011 @ 07:09:38
I think this subject is way beyond reading and forgetting. I can tell you that my sexy is not my safe, and I wear my sexy when my boyfriend goes with me as I’m not feeling safe at all without a man guarding me.

This is such a great and interesting project!!!! Thanks for sharing! The huge difference between sexy and sexy in the different cultures is just amazing isn’t it?

The woman in the second picture looks absolutely fantastic in her red dress!
My ‘safe’ outfit is my everyday one-black skinny jeans, loose t-shirt, leather jacket, usually with flat shoes of some variety. Thing is, that’s the outfit that makes me feel ‘sexy’ too, because it looks good, it’s comfortable and I feel confident in it. If I had to choose a sexy outfit, though, I’d choose my black party dress (can’t believe I only have one LBD…time to shop for some more, methinks!) and the ubiquitous leather jacket.

I agree with you. It totally depends on context, and ultimately, would be nice not to be a matter of “safe VS sexy”. They shouldn’t be exclusive of one another.

I love that the Japanese woman’s sexy outfit had nothing to do with showing skin! What a cool post.

I especially liked her one. AND she’s representing the USA in the project.
